Artist Lieve Van Stappen became fascinated by the rich archives of the Bruges OCMW (Public Centre for Social Welfare), especially by everything concerning the theme of abandoned children, orphans, motherhood, death and life, loss and mourning, from the past until now. Her exhibition 'Moving Archives' shows the results of her long and profound research in these archives as well as in the Hospitaalmuseum's collection. Her investigation also steered her towards a number of abandoned children and birth mothers, whose testimonies left a lasting impression. In this way, she learned to look at their world and at the pieces from the archives and the collection through the eyes of abandoned children. The London Foundling Museum, with its unique collection about foundlings, and its numerous testimonies and objects, is also a partner in this fascinating project.
Confronting, intimate artistic creations bring an emotional story.

The art of Leon Vranken [°1975] is primarily spatial. Self-made objects and shapes, which may or may not be recognisable and which may or may not alienate, stand separately or are grouped together in installations. In Bruges Vranken exhibits new works with a clear link to the art of painting. Amongst other exhibits, he shows a film, recorded during the ‘Art Brussels’ contemporary art exhibition.

In 2010 the Feast of St. James (25 July) falls on a Sunday. This means that 2010 is a Holy Year. Since medieval times Santiago de Compostela has been an important place of pilgrimage (in the top three along with Rome and Jerusalem). Even today, tens of thousands still make the journey to visit what is believed to be the grave of the apostle St. James – and not only from religious conviction. The long trek (on foot, by bike or on horseback) appeals to many people for many different reasons. From the farthest corners of Europe, pilgrims follow the centuries’ old pathways which lead to Compostela. Since its foundation in 1240 right up to the present day, St. James’s Church in Bruges has been the traditional starting point in the city for those who wish to visit the saint’s shrine in distant Spain.
The exhibition highlights various aspects of the pilgrim experience: the figure of St. James himself, his iconography, the different stages of the pilgrim’s route from Bruges, the different types of pilgrims, the use of a shell as the pilgrim’s symbol, penitential pilgrimages, etc. Works of art from the St. James’s Church are supplemented with pieces from other Bruges collections. Sculpture, paintings, fine gold and silverware, archive material and textiles are all on display. __________________________

Throughout the centuries, mankind has demonstrated its care for the dead in many different ways. Archaeologists frequently find traces of this funerary culture. With this exhibition, Raakvlak – the archaeological service for Bruges and the surrounding region - offers a wide range of interesting information about the various burial rituals it has unearthed during excavations in its area of operations.
Discover circular grave monuments from the Early Bronze Age, Roman cremation graves, an unusual belt ornament from the Early Middle Ages and painted burial chambers from the Late Middle Ages. These artefacts complement and amplify the older finds which are on display in the Welcome Church of Our Lady.

This exhibition contains a collection of valuable and delicate works of ivory art from the churches, monasteries and museums of Bruges. The artefacts on display are of exceptional quality. Many of them are religious in origin, but the collection also contains everyday items, such as buckles and an early hair slide. These unique pieces, some of which date back to the 12th century, can be seen together for the very first time in the infirmaries of the St.John's Hospital.

Bruges is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. In 2000 the Unesco quite rightly listed the entire historic inner city as a World Heritage site. Between the meandering alleys and romantic canals you can readily imagine being in the Middle Ages, and you will unavoidably fall under the spell of the city’s elegant mystery. Although the inner city of Bruges holds countless mediaeval memories, the world famous townscape is mainly a late 19th century creation. With this unique exhibition the Bruggemuseum-Gruuthuse offers an elucidation for this 19th century patina of the city for the very first time. Discover the true face of Bruges and its brilliant inventor Louis Delacenserie and view the picturesque city from a different angle!Hundred years after his death we can place the realisations of Delacenserie in their right perspective without avoiding the still very lively discussion on architecture in Bruges. In collaboration with Knack.

The Flemish poet and prose writer Paul van Ostaijen (1896-1928) is less well known as a film scenarist. His only film scenario – 'The Bankrupt Jazz' – was neither published nor filmed during his lifetime.
It was only in 1957 that the scenario was given a place in his Collected Works and it was 2009 before the script was finally filmed. This exhibition looks at Van Ostaijen and his scenario from the perspective of the period during which it was written: the Berlin of the 1920s, where he came into contact with both the first great jazz bands and the implosion of the capitalist system – hence the title.

> Related lecture and concert:

This year Jazz Bruges celebrates its fifth edition. This biannual festival was first organised during ‘Bruges 2002 Cultural Capital of Europe’ and was held in what was then the brand-new Concert Hall. Right from the very beginning, the festival aimed to present jazz of the very highest artistic quality from across the length and breadth of Europe – no simple matter for a genre which has been dominated both historically and commercially by the United States. However, it was a choice which found favour with the public, not least because of the adventurous and creative manner in which Europe’s jazz musicians interpret their music. In addition, the attractive locations and the quality of the infrastructure guarantee an unparalleled visual and acoustic experience. This fifth edition will once again be split between three different locations. This year's Musea Brugge location is the atmospheric attic of Memling in Sint-Jan, where a concert will be given each day at midday: > 30/09: Viktor Tóth Trio (Hungary) | 01/10: The Skopje Connection (Macedonia) | 02/10: Biondini / Girotto (Italy/Argentina) | 03/10: Delirium (Finland/Denmark).

For more than four months, Bruges Central will regale you with a varied and packed programme of concerts, films, stage performances, exhibitions and other events. _____
Born in 1958, Luc Tuymans is one of the leading artists of his generation. His fascination with Central Europe’s eventful history has been translated into a highly personal exhibition. Some thirty refreshingly innovative artists from that region show work that displays a clear vision of society. Like Tuymans, they don’t shy away from themes such as war, violence and trauma.
A key role is allocated to animation film, a genre Central Europe excels in and which the art world is increasingly embracing. Work will be shown by internationally celebrated animation artists from that region.
In the run-up to the exhibition, Pawel Althamer’s striking work ‘Balloon’ will hover above Bruges.
The exhibition trail will lead to five locations in the city, providing an idiosyncratic and up-to-the-minute view of a region on the move.
Curator: Luc Tuymans with the cooperation of Edwin Carels (in association with Cinema Lumière)

In the fifteenth century the Flemish Primitives triggered an artistic revolution in Central Europe. Talented painters like Jan van Eyck with his brilliant eye for detail, introduced new painting styles and techniques. Their influence spread rapidly and inspired scores of artists, including the painter, draughtsman and etcher Albrecht Dürer.
Van Eyck and Dürer are two great masters from the period 1420-1530. A pioneering exhibition brings together first-rate works by them and some of their contemporaries, drawn from notable European and American collections. Paintings and other art forms will illustrate the interaction between the Flemish Primitives and art in Central Europe. The exhibition looks set to be one of the cultural experiences of 2010.
With masterpieces by Bouts, Campin, Dürer, Lochner, Memling, Schongauer, van der Goes, van der Weyden, Van Eyck, ...
